Density of stone $=\frac{0.5 \mathrm{~kg}}{0.001 \mathrm{~m}^{3}}=500 \mathrm{~kg} / \mathrm{m}^{3}$. It is less than the density of water. Therefore the stone will float in water. When a body floats in water the increase in weight $=$ weight of the floating body. Therefore the total reading of the balance $$ =1.5+0.5=2 \mathrm{~kg} $$
