(a) : The process of nuclear fusion can be explained with the help of concept of binding energy per nucleon of very light nuclei and the intermediate nuclei. Binding energy per nucleon of very light nuclei is less than that of intermediate nuclei. It means light nuclei are less stable than that of intermediate nuclei. As ${ }^{40} \mathrm{Ca}$ has a large binding energy therefore it cannot be used as fuel for fusion energy.
